[edit] December 7, 2007

Black Liberation and Socialism was a presentation on the history and future of the struggle against racism titled "Black Liberation and Socialism". The talk, by Seattle community activist Jesse Hagopian, featured an analysis of historic movements against racism in the United States—from the separatism of Marcus Garvey, to the militancy of Malcolm X and the Black Panther Party, to the mass movements led by Martin Luther King—with essential lessons for today's struggles. "In the forty years since the civil rights movement, many gains have been made, but there is still far to go to win genuine change. The current lessons from Hurricane Katrina, nooses hanging in Jena, and prisons swollen with millions of young men and women of color show how far we have left to go. This presentation will serve as a primer on the history and future of the struggle against racism."

  • Date: Friday, December 7
  • Time: 7:00 p.m.
  • Location: Room 240c in McKenzie Hall on the campus of the University of Oregon

Biographical: "Hagopian  is quickly becoming well-known in Seattle for his commitment to social change and his dynamic organizational skills. In 2006 saw Hagopian worked on the Aaron Dixon for Senate Campaign, which pitted former Seattle Black Panther leader Aaron Dixon against the conservative Democratic incumbent Maria Cantwell.  Hagopian has also been central in organizing the anti-war movement, as well as the movement to keep military recruiters out of schools. He teaches grade school in Seattle Public Schools."

We hosted two events and participated in a third event on the Health Care Crisis in the U.S. The first was a screening of the film SiCKO, which attracted over 300 people. The following day we had a discussion on "Why Obama's health care plan (and that of the rest of the politicians) will leave you SiCKO"–a talk and public meeting. Hosted by the International Socialist Organization. There were around 30 people in attendance.

Then at the end of that month we teamed up with Archimedes Movement and Health Care for All-Oregon to discuss what could be done to create change concerning the Health Care Crisis in the U.S.
