[edit] Public Meetings

"Capitalism in Crisis" A public meeting organized by Black Sun Books and the International Socialist Organization-Eugene with John Bellamy Foster, University of Oregon professor of sociology, editor of Monthly Review, and author of numerous articles (over a 30 year period) on the political economy of capitalism.

"The World financial system is in the grip of the most severe crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s—and there's worse to come. Working Class people will be paying for this economic disaster for years to come in a number of ways—higher prices for food and other necessities, millions of foreclosures and evictions, greater unemployment, growing poverty, government programs cut back or eliminated, and rising tensions throughout society....The present crisis is laying bare the failure of the system for more and more people to see—and opening up opportunities to make the case for a socialist society, where the blind and irrational pursuit of profit and power is replaced by a commitment to freedom and equality for everyone in it."
—The above is excerpted from the 2008 Northwest Socialist Conference Website, an event organized by the Northwest branches (Seattle, Portland and Eugene) of the International Socialist Organization. The conference will take place on November 8th and 9th at Seattle Central Community College. Please check the conference website for a detailed list of the workshops, which will include further discussion of this talk by John Bellamy Foster.
